Aug 31st, Istanbul Technology Museum

8/31     Saturday
We head to the Sultanahmet District again to visit the Archeology Museum. As we arrive, walking through a huge, beautiful park, we enter the museum building and then realize we’re in the Museum of Science and Technology of Islam. This looks interesting enough, so we go in. The collection is essential an exploration of “Oriental” science, with elaborate models created from drawings and writings of ancient scholars. There are exhibit halls for Astronomy, Chemistry, Mathematics, Medicine, and more. It’s a stylish and accessible presentation. Much of the message is to illustrate the depth of scientific knowledge in the East, as most of Europe was experiencing the Dark Ages, plaque and whatnot. A number of prominent European scholars, called “Orientalists” developed a great appreciation for these very early scientists. The models, works of art themselves, create an illustration of the scientific principles. So we enjoy this museum quite a bit, even though the extent of it gets to be more than we’re prepared for. We leave just a little bit exhausted. Well educated, maybe, but ready for a café.
