6/10 Monday
We’re up early for our bus to
Rovinj. Today, we catch a tram ride,
so it’s an easy trip to the bus station. Our seats are 3 and 4, right I front
looking out the big window. We have about a four hour drive, but we have a
rest stops along the way. It’s another nice drive through the country, over a
low mountain range that lies between Zagreb and the sea. Our driver has a buddy
on this trip who sits in the jump seat at the front. They have an intense conversation for the
entire four hours, not a quiet minute to be had, sounds like they’re doing an
intricate analysis of the Croatian soccer team, the players, and the
competition. I can’t imagine what else would occupy them so completely for four
hours. While this is going on, there’s texting, phone calls, sandwich eating,
urgent two-handed gestures, the usual bus driver behaviors as we maneuver along
the road to Rovinj.
Somehow,
we arrive intact. Igor picks us up at the bus station and takes us to our
apartment, which is attached to his big home in a nice residential area. We
have a tidy, private and quite apartment, with a small terrace in the front and
the back. There’s even a sea view, if you look out over the trees in the garden
at just the right spot. There are a few cafes and a small grocery just a block
away. We grab some salads and breakfast foods, and call it an early night.
