June 11th, Rovinj Boat Tour

6/11     Tuesday
We walked a short ways from our apartment to a park along the sea. The neighborhood yards are all abloom with fragrant honeysuckle and rose bushes, and shaded with fig and apricot trees, accented by ancient, twisted olive trees. The piney woods make a shady side along the path, while the sea is just at your side. The coast is rocky, with pebbly beach areas all through the park. Most people are finding spots for their beach towels and little umbrellas out on the rough rocks that line the water’s edge. The path is busy with bikers and walkers and the occasional scooter. There are snack shops and beach bars, but only here and there, it’s not like the boardwalk. We can follow the path all the way to the town, a few miles at least. One area rises up to low cliffs that make a popular spot for rock climbing. It’s all very pleasant and picturesque.
Nearer to the city center, there are a few resort hotels, and more people enjoying the water. It comes to us that, after being surrounded by so many young people for the last month, in Prague and Zagreb especially, we’re seeing an awful lot of senior citizens here. Like, everybody. It’s a little weird. By Everybody, I mean Everybody Else, of course.
We come into the harbors of the city in time to book a sailboat ride around the islands on a two-masted classic wooden sloop. There are just six others on our ride (seniors), and we cruise over to the nearest island hotel to pick up about ten more (seniors), mostly Germans. We have a little complimentary grappa and settle in to enjoy the gorgeous scenery and blue-green waters. It’s fun to see the point of the old town with its cathedral from the water, even if this is no Acapulco limbo party crowd.
