5/22 Wednesday
Plan for the day: visit the
neighborhood farmer's market then try to make the full Castle tour. We'll see
how far we get today...
We're having a Kafkaesque time
getting to this Castle. The farmer's market was nice, a street full of vendors
with vegetables, breads, meats, cheeses, flowers, and enthusiastic shoppers. We
decide to stop at the bus station to see about travel to Terezin and Kutna
Hora, two nearby cities worth a daytrip. This leads us to take the metro to a
second bus station. Metro travel was pretty easy. The trains are efficient, the
stations are clean and easy to navigate. After talking to the bus information
guy, we sort of decide we might want to take an organized tour instead. So now
we're in a neighborhood near the DAX Contemporary Art Center, and we may as
well visit. We see an interesting exhibit in a secondary gallery, but most of
the center is closed, in-between shows. It's drizzly out, so we linger in the
cafe and gift shop, which has some very creative lamps, glassware and jewelry.
We head back on the metro to our main bus station, Florenc, to get our
tours. As we go over the itineraries, we
start to think that maybe we could do it ourselves. By now it's 5:30, so we go
home to do a little research and regroup.
It's another day without a castle,
but in the end we've got enough information to set our sights on a bus trip to
the concentration camp memorial at Terezin on Friday, then a train ride to the
former silver mining center at Kutna Hora on Saturday.
We go to a pub
just across our street for a dinner of roast duck with – dumplings!
