5/20 Monday
It's only about a mile from our
hotel to the apartment we're renting for the week. As we walk along the blocks, we pass a small bakery,
just a storefront with a metal gate, with an opening in the grate just big
enough to pass the bread through. A man picks up a couple loaves and juggles
them in his hands, they're so hot and fresh. We spend most of the afternoon
lazing around, doing some laundry in the tiny washing machine, then walk to the
supermarket for some breakfast foods. The neighborhood is very residential,
high on a hillside, blocks filled with the typical buildings. But along the
street are restaurants, cafes and minimarkets, so everything you'd need is
really nearby.
The apartment is two rooms, with a futon bed and a gilt
throne chair, a bentwood rocker, and a low coffee table. The windowsills and
shelves are full of cute knick-knacks, seashells and vases full of
feathers, a fake bird in a wire cage. There's a wall clock in the
shape of a peacock. Linda's bathrobe and Bambi slippers are left in the
bathroom. She's very comfortable about renting it, even lets us use her
computer. We're practically across the street from the 'Clown and Bard', a hostel
that's recommended in all the guidebooks, so there are lots of people in the
street at any hour.
