6/12 Wednesday
Today, we take a walk into the Old
town. The harbor is full of small fishing boats, and the surrounding plaza is
full of cafes and restaurants. The high point of the town holds the Church of
St. Euphemia, a lovely Italian Baroque church, unlike the Gothic cathedrals
we’re been seeing. The streets around the church wind around in narrow
channels, with old, old stones polished by hundreds of footsteps through the
centuries. There are small ateliers throughout, selling artwork and jewelry and
handmade clothing. The buildings come right up to the rocks at the edge of the
hill, and people come down to swim off the rocks, which is exactly what I do
after we walk around a bit. The water is deep and fresh and cool, with just enough
wave breaking against the rocks to make it fun.
The
specialty of the area is a fish dinner for two, so we find a beautiful little
restaurant with a terrace, and a couple of tables right on the rocks, just what
we want. We order the grilled fish and watch the seagulls and feral cats
staking out their turf. A luxury yacht has docked in the harbor, catching
everyone’s attention. Soon, everyone is pointing over to the harbor, laughing,
as a new yacht, twice as big, has settled in right next to it. Ha ha. The fish
is wonderful, and we watch the sunset over the water as we enjoy our dinner.
